Great explanation of why the trade deadline is really an economics problem, not just a baseball one. I especially liked the point that teams aren't simply buying players—they're buying incremental wins and playoff probability. That perspective makes many of the seemingly expensive deadline deals look much more rational.

Thanks, that's exactly the frame. And it goes one level deeper: wins aren't priced linearly. A marginal win is worth far more to an 85-win team on the playoff bubble than to a 70-win or a 100-win team. That's why contenders overpay in July. They're buying the wins that sit right on the postseason cutoff, where each one moves the odds the most.
